Today I spent some time reading about Martin Luther King Jr. and was once again humbled by this man’s resolve and devotion to seek justice on behalf of the oppressed. Isaac, our five year old was telling us today about a conversation he had with one of our friends about MLK Day and why we honor this man. He simply stated, “Martin Luther King is a hero.” When I asked him, “why?”, he replied, “Because he told everyone that they should be friends.” I proceeded to remind him about one of our favorite African fables about a young frog and snake who were not allowed to be friends because they looked differently. What a shame that so many people forgo deep, meaningful relationships because they don’t look the same. Made sense to Isaac. Of course, Martin Luther King Jr. should be a hero.
