VOICE Bringing Eternal Arts to the Streets Community Youth Development

Carter Street Garden Initiative

Carter Street Block Club” (CSBC) was formed out of Ujima (“collective work and responsibility” in Swahili) by residents of Carter Street as a response to the community’s desire to empower neighbors in practical ways via organizing around collective issues, and solving them with collective assets. One of our many things we have organized around is a community garden. As residents of Coconut Grove, we are attempting to pull together in these hard economic times and begin a community garden. This would generate access to fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables for our families, and educate our neighbors on how to manage an effective garden.  This will be done after the model of “Victory Gardens” where each resident will grow their own small garden in their yard and share 2/3 of the crops with others on the street. We start the construction of the raised gardening beds on this Saturday!

The following is a list of items we need for the creation of the gardens:

  • bags of top soil
  •  bags of peat moss
  •  cow manure
  • Wood, bricks or center blocks for raised bed construction
  • 10 Watering cans
  • 5 hand shears

  • 5 Bulb planters or trowels
  • 10 sets of gardening gloves
  • An assortment of Seeds
  • An assortment of plant (tomatoes, herbs, etc.)
  • 3 long-handled shovels
  • 2 leaf or iron rakes
If you or anyone you know are interested in helping donate to this cause please let me know.
We are so excited for what this will do for our street to foster community, life, work, and health!
